Meet Atrium Health's Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute

In 2021, Atrium Health opened Kenilworth Medical Plaza I and II in midtown Charlotte, NC, a quarter-billion-dollar investment into advanced care, research, and holistic wellness services for the region. The more than 400,000-square-foot facility is home to the Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, a cardiovascular care clinic that offers a wide range of complex specialty services for outpatient clients.

Spanning five floors, the Sanger Institute features cardiovascular imaging, an expansive cardiac rehabilitation and wellness center, a demonstration kitchen for healthy cooking classes, and the unique Center for Sports Cardiology, a collaboration between Sanger and Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute. Bringing these services underlines Atrium’s commitment to holistic and convenient outpatient care. 

Research shows integrated cardiovascular care can reduce unnecessary referrals, emergency visits, hospitalizations, and general practitioner consultations, leading to better outcomes and lower costs. But consolidation also brings logistical challenges. Large, complex facilities can be difficult for patients and staff to navigate, especially when they are often coming from various different departments throughout the facility. Atrium Health Kenilworth Medical Plaza quickly identified digital wayfinding as critical to ensuring the success of its integrated care model.

Their vision was clear: deliver holistic, patient-centered care that is accessible and seamless from the moment patients arrive. That’s where 22Miles came in.

Solutions

Atrium Health partnered with 22Miles to deploy a digital wayfinding solution powered by Intel NUC Mini PCs and managed through the 22Miles CMS. Together, the teams designed a system tailored for healthcare’s unique accessibility and patient-experience needs:

  • Interactive wayfinding kiosks at 10 high-traffic entry points and elevator hubs.
  • Step-by-step navigation with building-to-building and floor-to-floor routing.
  • Mobile wayfinding integration allowed patients to scan and continue navigation on their own device, improving hygiene and accessibility.
  • Screen-flip functionality brought maps and keyboards within reach for wheelchair users.
  • Accessible routing optimized for limited mobility paths.
  • Multilingual support, creating a welcoming, inclusive intake experience.
  • Analytics dashboards gave administrators real-time insights to optimize resource placement and future facility design.
